As you may (or may not) know, we’ve recently introduced Our Conscious Nation to the business, a platform focused on incorporating all things sustainable into our brand, and a place for us to share our wins and challenges on this journey. Once we’d started on our sustainability mission, we knew that our approach to lowering our environmental impact had to be holistic, all the way from design to your doorstep. So, after making significant headway on the use of sustainable fabrics in our garments, we looked at what else we could do.
As consumers ourselves, we know the joy of online shopping, and the thrill of receiving a new package in the mail, but when you start to think about how much packaging waste is being produced, only to be discarded shortly after - it is truly horrifying. So naturally, this was our next area of focus in which to reduce our environmental impact.
When we started our extensive search for packaging that aligned with our new sustainable ethos, we quickly formed an alliance with New Zealand based, The Better Packaging Company who design revolutionary customised packaging for a circular ‘eco-nomy’, an economy in which generating waste is not an option and the earth’s resources are not treated as infinite. What we loved about The Better Packaging Company is that they consider the complete lifecycle impact of a package from raw material sourcing, right through to end-of-life disposal.
The comPOST bags (our most frequently used delivery option) are made from 100% biodegradable and compostable materials. The combination of materials used represents a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional plastics, is non-toxic and contains no Phthalate or Bisphenol A (BPA). The most sustainable option for end users once finished with a comPOST Pack is to put it in with their food scraps and garden waste. They will break down within approximately 90 days in a compost environment in a non-toxic process.
comPOST Pack materials have been certified AS 5810-2010 for Home Composting, meaning they will be completely degraded by microorganisms in the natural world under compost conditions. Ultimately this generates carbon dioxide and water and does not pollute the environment.
We are super-excited to have found this superior alternative to plastics, that still allows us to deliver our goods in signature P.E style. We’re already using a great deal of compostable packaging (you may have already received some!) and are currently transitioning the remainder of our packaging and delivery materials to fall in line with The Conscious Nation ethos by the end of this year. Aside from our commitment to using compostable envelopes and satchels from The Better Packaging Co, we are also on the verge of implementing recyclable cardboard boxes and drawstring bags made from rPET (material made using recycled PET plastic) to further reduce our environmental impact.
